The Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center (KP-RWC) was established in 1952, and was one of the first Regional Kaiser Medical Centers in the San Francisco Bay Area. KP-RWC is a Center of Excellence for the Neurosciences, which was established in 1971. The Center offers high-quality care for patients with complex neurosurgical diagnoses including patients who require more complex stroke treatment. In November 2006, the Comprehensive Primary Stroke Center received its Joint Commission certification. In February 2007, KP-RWC was awarded the American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Stroke Initial Performance Achievement Award. In 2006 and 2007, KP-RWC received the Medal of Honor for Organ Donation from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for significantly raising the organ donation rates of eligible donors from its facilities. In June 2007, KP-RWC completed the implementation of KP HealthConnect – an electronic medical record system that provides physicians and nurses with full access to patients’ electronic health records in the outpatient setting. KP HealthConnect will be extended to the hospital in 2009. KP-RWC has also been a smoke-free campus since 2006.
